AIS stands for Automatic Identification System. When asked about AIS, we often use the example of exchanging virtual boat “business cards" with real time navigational data on the water. 

AIS information includes the vessel name, call sign, vessel size, along with navigation data such as SOG and COG that can be displayed on your boat’s chartplotter. 

Some chartplotters will even predict potential collisions and warn the operator.
