hi everyone jeff cote here with
boatingtechtalk.com
we've got a question from a fellow
boater named gary who has an ocean
alexander
gary says jeff i'm installing an
isolation transformer on my boat i have
a 30 amp and 50 amp service on board
which make and model would you recommend
um well there's been a few developments
in this world
in the last few years ultimately
you want an isolation transformer that
is marine certified
in the past and we can certainly see
that in a lot of boats
charles industries was probably one of
the largest players
in that space they used to have a pretty
significant selections
of isolation transformers and i've seen
them aboard
all the high-end boats that being said
there are new players in the industry
and when you're buying an isolation
transformer you're probably going to
have it
you know it's going to be sometimes it's
hard to find what you want and sometimes
you're forced to
choose a product that is more readily
available from one of your local
suppliers
the challenge is with isolation
transformers is their weight
they're very very heavy and make sure as
well that they are certified
for abyc here in north america
especially
there are isolation transformers from
europe
of course it's a great area in north
america you know the codes are
more voluntary than mandatory so some
boat owners are certainly installing
these european isolation transformer
aboard their boats
they are but in terms of keep your boat
to code especially if your boat is here
in north america
i would make sure that the isolate
transformer that you end up purchasing
is um approved
to be installed in a marine environment
my go-to
choice is charles but that's not to say
it's the only one
just make sure it's a reputable sort of
manufacturer
and generally again like i said you're
probably going to have to choose one
from a supplier that has it locally
because otherwise
due to the weight shipping those units
can be
pretty cost prohibitive and sometimes
even here locally we end up choosing the
the isolate transformers that are
available rather than the isolation
transformer that we would choose
regardless of availability great project
by the way big fan of isolation
transformers every boater should have
one
the challenge that we all face is the
cost
the weight which is significant and also
the space it takes
but if we could magically make them tiny
like a galvanic isolator
all of us would have one on our boats or
should have one on our boat
so good on you to tackle that project
gary well done
