[Music] hi Jeff Cote with Pacific yacht systems what we're gonna talk about Nexus alternators and why that's interesting as a boater is it's really a way for you to recharge your batteries while underway or if your engine is running at idle which is not a good thing but basically your engine has to be running for an alternator work we end up swapping alternators quite a lot or even what we do is maybe not swap them but actually modify them for external field external regulators so we've done a video on external regulators and you can end up buying one of these alternators a high output alternator like this ball Mar here and actually work in conjunction with an external regulator what's really nice about basically a specific marine alternator is that they're gonna be wounded this is a way to say that basically they're gonna give you high output at low rpms car alternators are really meant to work at speed when your engines actually you're running not at ten kilometres an hour or fifteen kilometres an hour which is a function of rpm but really running when you know you're at high speeds 100 kilometres an hour or maybe 60 miles an hour so what's really nice about a specifically built marine alternator is that you're gonna have high output at low rpm and so that would be one of the reasons why we end up changing those will also end up choosing an alternator in sizing an alternator for the battery bank that you have installed on your boat and a lot of times that's going to be your house battery bank and as many boaters don't have a generator how do you go about recharging your house bank that now is probably quite large or you want to have quite large and you want to do it quickly efficiently so sail boaters for example on my boat I've got a hundred and twenty amp alternator and I'm gonna have a single V belt and I've D rated the alternator and I bring it down so that it's outputting about 90 amps but we've done alternators up to 220 amps even I've done on a big engine a 300 F alternator you can have them 12 volts 24 volts and there's all this choice out there and ultimately the goal for you as an owner as boater with your alternators how do I get all the energy I can one my engine and I'm underway so that my batteries get charged as much as possible so when you get to your destination you can use your batteries for another day two days and then start the process all over again if you've got questions on battery alternators engine alternatives feel free to reach us at pacific gas systems thanks for watching
