hi
jeff cote here with another session of
boating tech talk
so we've got a question from a fellow
boater steve steve asks jeff
i've got a single outboard and i've got
one start battery and one house battery
by the way right there i'm liking it
right so you've got an outboard sure
you have one battery for starting the
engine but it's always good to have a
backup battery
for your house loads okay and even if
you don't even have divide and conquer
and do engine and house
then you should have battery one battery
tube if you have an outboard you should
have two batteries
because when we're on the water you
don't want to have all your eggs in one
basket
and have only one battery that can start
the engine always
always advisable to have a second
battery to start an engine
especially the further afield we go and
if we don't want to have a terrible
experience on the water
having a second battery to start an
engine is a good idea so
steve has two batteries he has an engine
battery and a house battery so far so
good
he's saying jeff here i'm thinking about
installing a blue seize battery combiner
this is
blue cs call them automatic combiner
relays they're just a marketing word
um it's basically a term acr
automatic combiner relay or blue another
company
calls it basically vsrs voltage sense
relays
they're just marketing words to describe
basically
a battery combiner
so steve keeps going and he says jeff my
house battery is connected to the acr
post
a and my star battery is connected to
the acr post b
okay all right so far so good and he
asked jeff
both wires are connected via an mrbf
fuse
150 amp love it so far so good
very important when we're putting
battery combiners on our boats it's
essential
to not take shortcuts don't take
shortcuts i'm telling you
the pitfalls are plenty and you won't
even know that you did something wrong
because you just don't know
so always follow the instructions so
steve's doing the right thing
he's going battery to battery and the
acr is right in the middle
so far so good i like it now he asks
does it matter what position the battery
selector switch is on
right and here's a question for the acr
or the battery combiner to operate
properly
good question because it's confusing you
know battery combiners
offer battery it basically allows two
batteries to be put in
effectively in parallel whenever there
is a charging voltage
acr works regardless of whatever the
battery switch is battery switches are
something else
yes they would manually put potentially
your batteries in parallel and of course
they would
but the acr even if the battery switch
was not there even if the battery switch
was off
if it's on one if it's on two if it's on
both
regardless of what that battery switch
is doing that it exists
or not does as long as your battery
combiner is connected to both batteries
directly
via fuses and that battery combiner is
in the middle
the battery combiner is going to allow
both batteries to be in parallel
whenever there's a charging voltage and
you don't have to worry about the
battery source selector switch
and that's the beauty of the battery
combiner it allows you to have your
battery
your engine battery that gets a charge
when the engine is running
assuming that you're started off that
battery it will share
that charge with another battery the
battery combiner
and so steve you're doing it the right
way and you don't have to touch the
source selector switch
to share a charge you certainly do have
to use a switch to start your engine
because with the engine source selector
switch off
you should not be able to start the
engine and that's a good step to do by
the way
turn the battery switch off and see if
your engine starts and if it does start
then you know your battery switch is not
properly installed
but with the battery switch on your acr
should work no problem
because it's going to chair
automatically that charging voltage to
your house battery from your engine
battery
so that's an excellent question steve
and thanks for asking
