hi everyone jeff cote here from pacific
outsystem we are doing another session
of votingtechtalk.com
we have a question from a fellow voter
taylor asks jeff the power was out at my
marina for about a week before i had a
chance to get the boat i am still
surprised that no one noticed and the
marina did not notify me
yeah welcome to the world that we live
in it's just the reality uh
it's not
most of the marinas don't have
monitoring at the end stations so unless
someone is monitoring and the problem is
at the panel and it's a bigger problem
you're right they might not know
and it becomes basically our burden to
know if we lose shore power on our boats
and effectively then our batteries can
start draining if there are any loads
taylor continues to ask is there a
do-it-yourself way that my boat can let
me know when the power has been
disconnected
further note he goes on there is wi-fi
at the marina but that doesn't really
solve the problem if the power goes out
good question
um do it yourself
absolutely
depends on the skill set right there are
some of us that are really good at
control systems
and there are ways certainly to actually
buy products that would enable you to do
that it's definitely doable meritron
would probably allow you to build
something like that with actually
off-the-shelf products
obviously you you know depending on the
skill set some of us are going to be
able to do this with no
without any difficulty some others are
going to have it you know not going to
be easy and we're going to need a little
bit of help and for some others of us it
won't be possible right and it's not
that straightforward to know if you know
for who this applies to right the best
way of finding out is seeing what your
experience maybe start looking a little
bit more into it
but most of the time
some other owners what they choose to do
especially if they're going to not be
able to do it themselves are going to
end up buying products that actually
offer that capability right so there are
monitoring systems for boats that enable
you to monitor certain voltages
including shore power
so you can actually monitor shore power
voltages and the loss of shore power and
then you can also monitor voltages on
your battery
i mean some monitoring systems allow you
to monitor even ambient temperature on
your boat inside the boat
so there are certainly different modules
that you can do out there there's some
that are you know all in one device that
do all of that
and there's other devices like maratron
that are going to allow you or even c
zone that are allow you to build that
and actually build a system where you
can monitor and then you can actually
relay that information to the outside
world
and you're right sometimes you can re
relay that information via wi-fi and
some other systems actually have as a
backup so they'll use wi-fi when
available and if wi-fi is not available
they're actually going to go over
cellular network
so now of course there's a fee to that
some are just you know text messages how
frequently do you have the text message
fee so you can actually keep the cost
down
uh in the past certainly when we looked
into that you know there was some
solutions where you could have wi-fi as
primary cellular as backup and then you
could also at the time actually have i
think the text messages were not like
you weren't paid regularly you could
actually pay per usage so there are ways
to keep the cost down but again you know
it depends on how much redundancy you're
looking for
so yeah definitely uh you can absolutely
build that yourself um start probably
the easiest one i think for doing it
yourself would probably be meritron and
if you've got c-zone on your boat
already or you're thinking about going
sea zone um then season might be a
contender as well so yeah great question
and it's important for us all to
remember that when we're away from our
boats
our boats can't talk to us and so the
ones of us that are lucky enough to
visit our boats regularly
that's a great thing so
count yourself lucky and for the ones of
us that don't including myself my boat
is far away i haven't been to my boat in
over four weeks now
and then the monitoring systems are
actually a good way to give you peace of
mind
and oh lastly another idea that i've
heard about is some people are doing
these with security cameras from home
entertainment
or home security and they're putting a
camera looking at their ac dc panel and
the camera is basically remotely logged
in and so you can actually remotely log
into your camera over the obviously
marina's wi-fi and you can look at your
ac dc panel to know what the voltage is
you can't really commute it's old school
it's a video feed
you've got to log in it doesn't send you
alerts but that's another really maybe
do it yourself less expensive way than
doing it with other products so thanks
for asking the question i want to thank
you for watching this video don't forget
to subscribe if you want to get more of
this cool content and also check out our
website if you've got questions that are
unanswered we've actually taken the time
to answer quite a few questions and you
might be surprised to find the answer
right there on our website so thanks
again
