hi youtubers jeff cote here
we've got a question from joe and joe's
from eagle harbor in on bain bridge
island
and he's asking jeff i've got a thunders
thunder
struck 48 volt motor how do i charge the
48 volt battery bank with my 12 volt
solar panels oh great question
all right so here we go so let's have a
look at this diagram
so we know that when we purchase a
controller
we've got to actually think about a few
things what are those things one is the
wattage
of the solar panel right the other one
is actually really important is going to
be what is going to be the
input voltage so panels remember
are never outputting what your battery
needs there's no such thing as a panel
that you can just connect to your
batteries
right and that is where the solar
controller comes in
so this solar controller here
will have an input voltage from the
panel and the panel some of my panels
are 8 volts
you can wire a bunch of panels in series
and have a
panel array that is 40 volts 60 volts 80
volts
either way it's not the right voltage 8
volts not good
80 volts not good and so how do you get
an
8 volt panel or an 80 volt array to give
you the right voltage
the way you do that is actually with the
controller right here and the trick
is you need to choose the controller not
only for the solar wattage the solar
amperage
but also the battery voltage and the
good news is
there are solar controllers that output
48 volts
and those solar controllers are
generally called the boost controllers
meaning the input voltage coming into
the panel
it might be or into the controller might
be only 20 volts
might be 12 might be eight and they're
going to take that voltage
and they're going to actually bring it
up boost the voltage
and bring it to 48 volts so it is
absolutely possible to buy a controller
that outputs 48 volts even though the
input voltage is
20 or 8 or 10 or 12 and so you do that
by buying the right controller for your
application and victron makes controls
like that as well
