hi youtubers jeff cote here with pacific yacht systems doing another installment of ask pys all right we've got a fellow voter here asking about this concept that i bring up all the time between unswitch and switch distribution and you can ignore that at your apparel remember i've got lots of presentations on that and the concept of unswitch and switch distribution is um if you don't care about that you're going to be in a world of hurt a world or hurt your boat's going to be magical so one of the questions here is from the boater is jeff i've got a solar panel and you're saying in your videos about connecting the solar controller effectively from the solar panel to the controller and we've got a little controller right here so this little controller from victron this 7515 is a controller that we use all the time that controller should be always connected to the unswitched distribution and the boater here is asking why it's important to remember that all charging circuits being an alternator solar controller wind turbine battery combiners battery isolators all devices that are used for charging should always be connected to the unswitched distribution if you don't do that this is where magic happens so for example if this solar controller is connected to the switch side of the distribution and i see this all the time boaters are trying to save cost save time right and you connect that directly to your panel and so basically if you connected your panel your panel is switched so you've got a solar controller directly connected to your basically dc panel the moment you actually take on and here's a battery switch i got props this week right um so you've got a battery switch and the moment you disconnect your panel what's going to happen is this solar controller here is actually effectively powering your dc panel right but not connected to the battery so the moment a load is removed basically what's going to happen is the voltage is going to jump up or the moment a load is added this won't respond as quickly you need a sort of a a damping device and a battery allows you to take loads being removed and added quickly without having the voltage spiking or dropping so that's why it's so important to have all charging sources be connected to the unswitched side which is effectively means the battery but we can't bring everything to a battery because the battery post is not a distribution system right it's just a battery so that's why we put in bus bars that allow us to have unswitched distribution so that was a really good question and the concept is very important and do not ignore it un-switch versus switch distribution thank you for watching this video if you've got further questions and you're wondering about your own boat please ask questions below or send us an email with your questions and we'll get to them hopefully as soon as possible if you haven't done so please subscribe to our youtube and get our weekly updates we're posting about four videos a week right now and also thanks for watching
