hi jeff cote here from pacific yacht system we've got a question from a fellow voter named gunner hey jeff great seminar as usual thank you appreciate it glad you like the content i'm going to install two battery banks one engine and two for house i'm using a battery isolator the modern one the argo fett from victron big fan do i connect the solar connect controllers directly to the house battery bank i have 200 watt solar panels should i have one or two controllers a lot of questions here and they're not easy right so let's do them one at a time most of the solar controllers that we use are single output solar control so there's such a thing as a solar controller that actually has two outputs but the controllers that we install and most of the times that we use on both are single output meaning they're meant to be installed to a single battery so in most instances i would recommend having a solar controller connected directly to the house battery and i would want that so that it's unswitched so even when the battery switch off the solar controller has to be directly connected to the battery or a positive distribution right beside the battery that is always powered regardless if the battery switch is turned on or on or not so that's the first question and then the other question was can i install two solar panels or if i do install two solar panels 100 watts should i install them in series in parallel or dedicated controllers shading is a huge issue with solar panels it's shocking to realize how shading even just a hat on a cell will actually bring the so the solar output dramatically down so if we consider that and we know that there are sometimes issues of shading on our boats because there might be things a little bit higher than the solar panels you'll want to make sure that you put a dedicated solar controller per panel so if one panel is shaded it's not going to affect the whole array now if you're lucky and your solar panels are high enough and nothing will ever shade the solar panels even a little bit then i would recommend installing the solar panels in series bringing them to a single controller and then that single controller going to the batteries another point and something else to consider is how important are those solar panels for your boat some of us really need our solar panels it's important we can't live without them so in those instances i always ask the client what happens if the controller fails does it make sense to have for reasons of redundancy multiple solar controllers so if you lose one panel or you lose a controller you're not losing the whole array so redundancy is certainly an argument and on my boat remember i have six solar panels six controllers i have a sailboat and i didn't want to have any shading affect the output of my solar array sixth controller six solar panels all connected directly to the house battery so that was an interesting question from god thanks for watching this video if you've got further questions that we didn't answer please ask them below or go on our website and fill up one of the forms and lastly if you haven't subscribed to our channel please do so that way you'll get the regular contents and in closing thanks for watching
