hi jeff gote here with pacific yacht systems uh we're doing another uh ask pys and this time we've got a question from jamie so jamie asks jeff i've been wondering and can you help me i've got a 48 volt battery bank uh so that's generally happens with boaters that are looking at electrical propulsion on my boat and it has two alternators on it okay all right so this engine has two alternates and it's 48 volt volt so that's pretty unusual want to start and want to change the battery bank but the alternator is only 12 volts so obviously the engine battery is most likely 12 volts and the starter is probably 12 and the alternator one of them will both alternatives are 12 volts and the question is how do you recharge a 48 volt battery bank if you've got 12 volt alternators can you put a dc to dc basically converter to charge from a 12 volt alternator to 48 volt alternator it's a good question we like i said see this a lot with electric propulsion now in this case jamie here doesn't have electrical propulsion that's why he's got alternators what i would do is i yeah i agree his suggestion was to probably change one of the 12 volt alternators to 48 and that's what i would do too i'd have if i had the ability i'd have two alternators on my engine one for 12 one for 48 and then um that way you don't have to do a dc to dc converter dc-dc converter and in this instance he has a 180 amp 12 volt alternator it's going to be really challenging you know where are you going to find a dc to dc converter that can handle that sort of average like when we do dc to dc it might be 20 30 40 50 60 but 180 amps is just over the top so it's way better to just go straight 48 volts from an alternator directly to a 48 volt battery bank so that's a good question from jamie thank you for watching this video if you've got further questions and you're wondering about your own boat please ask questions below or send us an email with your questions and we'll get to them hopefully as soon as possible if you haven't done so please subscribe to our youtube and get our weekly updates we're posting about four videos a week right now and also thanks for watching
