a question from a fellow boarder

and this motor has two engines two

battery banks so he's got

a port and starboard and he's got two

engines and he's asking

how should i recharge those how should

those engines recharge my battery banks

well the easiest and simplest way is to

have

each engine has its own alternator and

have each alternate alternator connected

to its respective

engine battery or house battery right so

each alternator because remember

alternators are single upper devices

there's no such thing as an alternator

that connects to three battery banks

now alternators have a single output and

now

if in this instance this boater came to

me and said

jeff i've got two engines

a port and a starboard engine battery

and a house battery how in the world am

i going to charge

three battery banks with only two

outputs

and that is the world of

a battery combiner or battery isolator

so this is a battery isolator where you

can actually have one input to three

outputs and they come in one to three or

one to two

or that would be on the output of the

alternator or you could actually have

the battery combiner

and i've got a battery combiner right

here and a battery combiner would be a

way to actually connect between the

engine battery and the house battery in

between the other engine battery and the

house battery

and it's effectively what this

is which is a manual way and a lot of us

we're doing it that way forever where

you actually whenever the engine is

running you're literally putting that

battery switch to all

both or here one and two as a way to

share whatever

happening to your engine battery to

share with another battery

so basically if you've got two battery

banks two engines

dedicated alternators to each is

probably the way to go if you've got

more than two battery banks three

four five batteries and you only have

two alternators

then you're going to use a combination

of battery combiners

or what i really like are battery

isolators

and i've got videos on these topics some

videos are like 40 minutes

just on battery isolator so if you feel

the way to share

one alternator with multiple battery

banks
