How Can I Prevent the Generator and Inverter/Charger From Being Used at the Same Time?

Question:

I'm installing an inverter/charger in my boat next spring. It has a 6500 watt generator to (I love redundancy). The boat currently has a DPST for the shore power/generator. I'm told I should have a switch to prevent both the generator and the inverter/charger from being used at the same time? What does this switch look like? I thought this was done internally by the inverter when it senses the generator AC power? - Richard

Answer:

These switches come in a variety of shapes and sizes, there are rotary source selector switches or perhaps more popular is the duel double pole circuit breaker with slide to lock out one or the other power source.
