VIBS 2012 - Our Favourite Electronics

In preparation for the Vancouver International Boat Show, running February 8-12, we have compiled a list of our favourite electronics products for the boat. Come by booth #322 to see a complete list and talk with an expert technician about what is right for you and your boat.


Standard Horizon Matrix AIS VHF

PROs:

  • 80dB commercial grade DSC radio
  • Built-in dual channel AIS receivers
  • Requires only one VHF antenna

CONs:

  • Some AIS/DSC features require GPS input
  • Units AIS display limited to 10 targets
  • Larger than most standard VHF only radios

Telus Smart Hub

PROs:

  • Internet access up to 7.2 Mbps over 3G and 4G networks
  • Mobility on the water
  • Mobility on the water

CONs:

  • Requires a SIM card and Telus service plan

Intellian i4

PROs:

  • Large antenna provides better reception
  • Provides HDTV reception
  • Track satellites when underway

CONs:

  • Large 20 inch dish may not fit on boats under 40 ft
  • Requires an MIM to automatically switch between satellites

Raymarine i70 Instrument Display

PROs:

  • The first instrument display with AIS repeater
  • Sunlight viewable 4 inch colour wide screen
  • Easy to read customizable instrument pages

CONs:

  • Brand new software (may have program bugs)
  • Adaptor required for SeaTalk1 and N2K
  • Requires a separate N2K AIS receiver

Raymarine e7 Network Multifunction Display

PROs:

  • Bright wide HybridTouch display
  • Dual core main processor and dedicated graphic processor
  • WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity

CONs:

  • New product might need software update
  • Not network compatible with some older MFDs
