Standard Horizon Matrix AIS VHF

PROs:

  • 80dB commercial grade DSC radio
  • Built-in dual channel AIS receivers
  • Requires only one VHF antenna

CONs:

  • Some AIS/DSC features require GPS input
  • Units AIS display limited to 10 targets
  • Larger than most standard VHF only radios

KVH TracVision M1

PROs:

  • Smallest marine satellite TV antenna
  • Higher gain the other antennas in its class
  • Complete solution

CONs:

  • Limited to DirectTV in the US or Bell ExpressVu in Canada
  • Multiple TV setups more difficult to install

Lifeline AGM

PROs:

  • Excellent build quality
  • Higher charge rate than standard AGM (250% of C20 Ah rate)
  • Low self-discharge rate

CONs:

  • High cost and heavy

Telus Smart Hub

PROs:

  • Internet access up to 7.2 Mbps over 3G and 4G networks
  • Mobility on the water
  • Mobility on the water

CONs:

  • Requires a SIM card and Telus service plan

Magnum MagWeb Web Monitoring Kit

PROs:

  • 2800 measurements per day
  • 300 ft indoor range / 1 mile outdoor range
  • Low power draw (0.1 Watt)

CONs:

  • Requires on-board internet access
  • Does not store any data locally

ICOM IC-M604 VHF marine transceiver

PROs:

  • IPX7 Waterproof
  • Passes military standard testing for durability
  • Can add a 2nd remote station with COMMANDMIC II or III

CONs:

  • MMSI can only be programmed twice
  • Larger than the standard VHF

Smart Plug - 30A Boatside Inlet and Connector

PROs:

  • Trip thermostat in inlet cuts power before overheating
  • Straight electrical blades with 20x more contact area
  • Three weatherproof seals

CONs:

  • Existing shorepower cord needs to be modified
  • Need Smartplug adaptor for old 30A receptacle

Magnum MS Series Inverter/Charger

PROs:

  • Pure sine wave AC output
  • 3 stage charger with equalization and battery saver modes
  • Battery temp compensation

CONs:

  • Remote panel is necessary for some set up options and to display error msgs
  • Large DC power draw requires large AWG cables
  • Chassis ground connection size and location could be better

Solbian Flex Sun Power

PROs:

  • Many mounting options: zippers, double-sided tape, and grommets
  • Highest output (per sq. ft.) to weight ratio
  • High output solar panel: 22.5%

CONs:

  • Two to three times more expensive for similar rigid solar panel
