April 12thThe 15th Annual Massive Marine Garage Sale – Ogden Point, Victoria.  Looking for a good deal on something for your boat?  This sale has everything!

April 12 – 15th - The 4th Annual Nanaimo Boat Show will continue to grow from the success of previous years and promote the expansion of the boating industry on Vancouver Island. At last year’s show, they welcomed over 3,000 visitors and showcased millions of dollars worth of products and services. 

April 14thWine For Waves at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver.  Be the first to sip and savour Naramata Bench’s Spring Wine Releases. On April 13, this delicious evening of wining and dining will bring together B.C.’s best wineries and sustainable seafood restaurants. Taste Ocean Wise offerings, meet top B.C. winemakers, and bid on silent auction items including exclusive Naramata wines and wine experience packages. All proceeds will benefit the Ocean Wise sustainable seafood program. This is a 19+ event. 

April 21 – Bluewater Cruising presents “Women and the Realities of Voyaging”.  This full day seminar features Lisa Copeland and Agathe Gaulin who will discuss what it’s really like to be at sea and how to plan and be prepared.

 April 22 - Think globally while acting locally through Stanley Park Ecology Earth Day celebration at Stanley Park! Join in for a day of hands-on ecology through restoration activities, conservation action, crafts and booths for the whole family, and a tour to visit our local heron colony. Learn about the various conservation initiatives of the Stanley Park Ecology Society and how our work is supporting wildlife.  Free Admission!

April 8 – Women on Water 2017– Sponsored by BlueWater Crusing, this is a full day of courses covering everything from knots to navigation.  They will also be offering a session in the new Camosun College navigation simulation lab on slow speed maneuvering for anchoring and docking.

April 12 – Water Documentaries Film Night At the VIU Campus, Nanaimo.  Enjoy a selection of short films relating to all things water. Appreciate the beauty of aquatic ecosystems and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect our most precious resource, around the globe. There will be something for all interests!

April 14–17 – Easter Long Weekend, a kick-off to the season for many West Coast boaters!

April 22 - The Maritime Museum of BC (Victoria) is once again hosting its great annual Massive Marine Garage Sale. You will find a wide range of marine and recreational items with sellers packing the warehouse at Ogden Point and along the pier outside. 

April 22 – Earth Day, founded in 1990, Earth Day Canada is a national charity that inspires and supports people across the country to connect with nature and build resilient communities

April 28 - Wine For Waves at the Four Season's Hotel, will bring together B.C.’s best wineries and sustainable seafood restaurants.  All proceeds will benefit the Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise Program.

 

March 2017

 

March 11 – Basic Marine Electrical with Jeff Cote sponsored by the Vancouver Chapter of Bluewater Cruising.  This is a course for sailors who want to have a good understanding of their boat's electrical system.  We will talk electrical theory, look at all the key electrical components, circuits and even troubleshoot electrical problems using a multi meter.   The goal is to work towards self-sufficiency and to develop students' ability to find and resolve basic electrical problems.  The course runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Vancouver Maritime Museum.  For more information vaneducation@bluewatercruising.org

February 3, 4, 5Salmon Girl - explores the world of water and salmon.  Through theatre, dance, music and puppetry, this piece for all ages follows the journey of a young girl into this magical world.

The Month of February - Western Waters: The Royal Canadian Navy On Our Coast - The Vancouver Maritime Museum invites you to explore the Royal Canadian Navy, from its inception in 1910 to today. This is a journey through the individual stories, strategic operations and accomplishments of our local RCN during the wars of the 20th century.

February 11Hugs & Fishes Dinner and Sleepover at the Vancouver Aquarium – A one of a kind experience for your valentine.  A 3 course dinner, a fun presentation on the antics of sea life, followed by a tour, a cooking competition, and a cozy night in the underwater Wild Coast Exhibit.  Followed by coffee and a hot breakfast.

February 14 – Valentine’s Day – How about a snowshoe fondue at grouse mountain, or a night at the museum in Victoria, or maybe the 2nd annual Valentine’s Brewery Tour complete with themed libations.

February 22 - Royal Victoria Yacht Club - Three guest speakers, Christie Burdon from Navis Insurance, Jeff Cote from PYS and Jim Normey from Nordik Marine Surveyors.  Event starts at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments, contact christie@navismarine.ca for details.

January 18th – 22nd – The Vancouver International Boat Show – Western Canada’s largest boat show.  Visit us at booth 322 on the concourse for a chance to win one of five electrical audits or an iPad Mini.  Jeff will be speaking a number of times this year, check out the full schedule here.

    Again this year is the DIY Garage, PYS will be hosting a “hands on” class on marine electrical connections. Join us to learn about proper crimping techniques, heat-shrinking tips & tricks and battery connectors.  There will also be a class dedicated to solar panel installations.

 

November 2016

 

November 18 – 19 – Clayoquot Oyster Festival – This year is the 20th anniversary of showcasing Tofino’s favourite bivalve.  It is held in conjunction with the area’s harvest when the oysters are at their plumpest. There is a costume party, oyster farm tours and a gala chefs competition.

November 17 – 19 – Pacific Marine Expo - Held annually at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, this is the largest commercial marine tradeshow on the westcoast, serving mariners from Alaska to California.  There are presentations on industry education, safety, regulatory matters and technological advances.  All mixed in with a Fisher of the Year contest, Fisher Poets and daily happy hours.

November 22 - 23 – Boating BC Conference – Once a year, the recreational boating industry in BC gets together to connect, learn and share ideas. 

 

June 2016

June 11Martin Marine Round Bowen Race - There are normally 100+ plus boats registered, and with only 1 start, makes it one of the largest single starts on the west coast.

June 11 Burrard Yacht Club Classic Car & Boat Show Come out and see the beautiful wooden boats and restored cars at the annual Classic Car & Boat Show. Lots of events all weekend topped off with an amazing dinner and dance on the breakwater. Proceeds go to the Disabled Sailing Association.

June 17 – 19 – Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival – too many great performers to list.

June 18 – MEC Vancouver Paddlefest – from 10 – 3 on Jericho Beach – includes skills clinics, demo boards and a gearswap.

June 25– Mill Bay RCM-SAR BBQ Fundraiser, Cobblestone Pub, Cobble Hill, BC

It's Boat Show Season!

It's the new year and the boat show season is just around the corner starting with the Seattle Boat Show running from Jan. 25th to Feb. 3rd. This is the West Coast's Largest Boat Show featuring more than 1,000 recreational watercraft, seminars and the latest accessories indoors at CenturyLink Field, plus afloat on South Lake Union. Next up is the Vancouver International Boat Show that will be held at Granville Island and BC Place Stadium from Feb. 7th to Feb. 11th. More information can be found on their website.

 

Electrical 101 Presentation by Jeff Cote - Burrard Yacht Club

Are you a member of the Burrard Yacht Club? Jeff Cote is speaking on Wednesday, October 10th at 7:00 p.m. The topic is Electrical 101, just in time for winter boating!

Electrical 101 with Jeff Cote - Have you ever wondered if you are getting the maximum out of your batteries? Or if you really have to run your generator every day at anchor? Do you check your electrical wires for corrosion and chafing on a regular basis? It is not the most glamorous side of boating but it is a necessity and ignoring it only makes it more dangerous. Join us for an evening of no-nonsense, plain English Electrical 101. This presentation is designed for beginners, tech savvy and DIY experts alike.
