April 12thThe 15th Annual Massive Marine Garage Sale – Ogden Point, Victoria.  Looking for a good deal on something for your boat?  This sale has everything!

April 12 – 15th - The 4th Annual Nanaimo Boat Show will continue to grow from the success of previous years and promote the expansion of the boating industry on Vancouver Island. At last year’s show, they welcomed over 3,000 visitors and showcased millions of dollars worth of products and services. 

April 14thWine For Waves at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver.  Be the first to sip and savour Naramata Bench’s Spring Wine Releases. On April 13, this delicious evening of wining and dining will bring together B.C.’s best wineries and sustainable seafood restaurants. Taste Ocean Wise offerings, meet top B.C. winemakers, and bid on silent auction items including exclusive Naramata wines and wine experience packages. All proceeds will benefit the Ocean Wise sustainable seafood program. This is a 19+ event. 

April 21 – Bluewater Cruising presents “Women and the Realities of Voyaging”.  This full day seminar features Lisa Copeland and Agathe Gaulin who will discuss what it’s really like to be at sea and how to plan and be prepared.

 April 22 - Think globally while acting locally through Stanley Park Ecology Earth Day celebration at Stanley Park! Join in for a day of hands-on ecology through restoration activities, conservation action, crafts and booths for the whole family, and a tour to visit our local heron colony. Learn about the various conservation initiatives of the Stanley Park Ecology Society and how our work is supporting wildlife.  Free Admission!

 

 

February 2018

 

February - Prepare for an incredible journey through the curious collections of Mr. Ripley at Science World, the explorer extraordinaire who traveled the world collecting artifacts and stories from the remarkable people and places he encountered.

 Feb 1 – 14 – The Hot Chocolate Festival returns for its 8th year, bigger and better than ever, with Vancouver’s best chocolatiers, pastry shops, bakeries, cafes, gelato and ice cream makers coming together to make the humble hot chocolate hotter than it has ever been before.

February 9 – 10 - Love and Romance are front and centre in the beautiful Orpheum theatre, as conductor William Rowson and the VSO perform music that will get you in the mood for Valentine’s. Joined by pianist Jon Nakamatsu, soprano Robyn Driedger-Klassen, and tenor Frédérik Robert, the orchestra dials up some of the most sensual and romantic music ever written.

February 14 – Valentine’s Day – How about ice skating at Robson Square, the People’s Prom, after hours cocktails and “sex talk” (about coral) at the Vancouver Aquarium, Chinese New Year or a five-course dinner at Grouse Mountain

February 24 – March 4 – 40th Annual Vancouver International Wine Festival  is Canada’s premier wine show and widely considered to be the best wine event in North America. With ~25,000 admissions, it is one of the biggest and oldest wine events in the world.  Tickets sell out fast.

January 26 – February 3 – Seattle Boat Show has lots of free boating and fishing seminars, scope out the latest watercraft and accessories from hundreds of exhibitors, and be entertained with fun events, food and drinks, and family-friendly activities. From stand-up paddleboards to superyachts, the Seattle Boat Show is bringing even more this year.

December 1 – January 7 – Arctic Oasis at the Bloedel Conservatory - The city's only holiday Ferris wheel is rolling at Queen Elizabeth Park with festive lights, music and a holiday scavenger hunt. Warm up inside the tropical dome while enjoying the exotic birds, lush gardens and holiday light display produced by MK Illumination. Find all the hidden penguins in the arctic oasis, holiday-themed scavenger hunt. Enjoy the evening city views and lit fountains at Queen Elizabeth Park. November 2017

 

November 1 -  On-line registration opens for Women’s Day at the 2018 Vancouver Boat Show.  Join us on Sunday, January 21, 2018 for a full day of boating seminars and guest speakers designed to educate and inspire.  Tickets are limited and will sell out fast, add November 1st to your calendar.

November 2 – Yaletown Brewing Co’s Martini Madness - Three guest bartenders will slamdown with their martini creations, the winner to be determined by your vote. There will also be a live DJ on site and a 50/50 cash prize. All proceeds to benefit Kids Help Phone. Drink Tickets are $10 at the door CASH ONLY, which includes 3 martinis (yes, you read that right!)  

November 16 – 18 – Clayoquot Oyster Festival – The format for the 21st annual event has changed a bit this year, the anchor events will be held at  some of Tofino’s best restaurants. Events include the Beautiful Mask and Oysters, Best Oyster Dish competition, Chef-Farmer Shuck N’ Slurp Relay, Tofino Costume Party and the 1909 Champagne and Pearls dinner.

November 21 – 22 – Boating BC Conference - Each November the recreational boating industry in British Columbia steps away from their busy lives to attend the annual Boating BC Conference. It’s an inspiring two days where people come to learn, connect and share ideas.

 

July 2017

July 1 – Join in to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday with too many events to list! 

July 1 - Sept 2 - Butchart Gardens Fireworks (Saturday Evenings) feature a jaw-dropping, dazzling firework show with both aerial and ground displays choreographed to music.  Take it from my Mom, she goes ever year!

July 1 - Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition- registration starts at 9:45 am, building the sandcastles is from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, and winners will be announced at 1:45 pm.  Lions will be selling t-shirts and running a concession at the beach. Jim Taylor will bring lively music to the beach area. Be sure to wear sunscreen and a hat. Bring your pails and shovels, have fun and make great memories!       

July 7 – 9 - Nanaimo Dragonboat Festival is now in its 15th year at Maffeo Sutton Park.  Dragon boat racing is one of the most amazing sports you will ever get to witness so take the time to come down and cheer on the 70+ racing teams. Then stay for the Shriners pancake breakfast, food trucks, candle and carnation ceremonies, Longwood Brewery beer gardens, and more.  

July 14 - 16 - The Vancouver Island MusicFest held at the Comox Valley Fairgrounds and features artists such as Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn and the Barenaked Ladies.  This year they even have their own music festival app.

July 16 - The 28th Annual Nanaimo Silly Boat Regatta will be celebrating its 50th anniversary while Canada celebrates its 150th.  The team themes will revolve around a birthday, Canadian history celebration feel.

July 16 - Texada Island Fly-In held at the Gillies Bay Airfield aka the friendliest rural fly-in with a real asphalt runway.

July 21 – 23 - Nanaimo Marine Festival & Bathtub Race which runs all week but the world championship bathtub race runs on July 23rd at 11:00 a.m.  Lots of vendors, a street fair, kids zone and two nights of concerts.

July 22 - Bowen Island Classic Car Show features unique vehicles, art installations and music

July 23 - Powell River Sea Fair Festival is now in its 53rd year and features a parade and vintage cars.              

July 29   Vancouver Honda Celebration of Lights Fireworks – Japan – Great fireworks and great food trucks.  If you would rather beat the crowd, you can buy tickets ahead of time for the Keg Lounge located on the bathhouse roof with snacks, cocktails and a VIP bathroom!

July 29 – 30 - Texada Island Blues and Roots Festival celebrates the music and artists within 100km of Gillies Bay.  There will be a farmers market, food and craft vendors, a kids’ zone for the young ones to play, and a place to quench the adults’ thirst.  Texada is home to Heicholt Lake, named one of the ten best lakes to swim in Canada.

July 29 – 30 - Sea Cavalcade in Gibsons has one of the best logos ever!  Now in its 49th year, this fun filled weekend has something for everyone.  The Tin Man Challenge, Keats to Armours swim, pancake breakfast, beer garden, classic cars, salmon BBQ and a parade.

April 8 – Women on Water 2017– Sponsored by BlueWater Crusing, this is a full day of courses covering everything from knots to navigation.  They will also be offering a session in the new Camosun College navigation simulation lab on slow speed maneuvering for anchoring and docking.

April 12 – Water Documentaries Film Night At the VIU Campus, Nanaimo.  Enjoy a selection of short films relating to all things water. Appreciate the beauty of aquatic ecosystems and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect our most precious resource, around the globe. There will be something for all interests!

April 14–17 – Easter Long Weekend, a kick-off to the season for many West Coast boaters!

April 22 - The Maritime Museum of BC (Victoria) is once again hosting its great annual Massive Marine Garage Sale. You will find a wide range of marine and recreational items with sellers packing the warehouse at Ogden Point and along the pier outside. 

April 22 – Earth Day, founded in 1990, Earth Day Canada is a national charity that inspires and supports people across the country to connect with nature and build resilient communities

April 28 - Wine For Waves at the Four Season's Hotel, will bring together B.C.’s best wineries and sustainable seafood restaurants.  All proceeds will benefit the Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise Program.

 

March 2017

 

March 11 – Basic Marine Electrical with Jeff Cote sponsored by the Vancouver Chapter of Bluewater Cruising.  This is a course for sailors who want to have a good understanding of their boat's electrical system.  We will talk electrical theory, look at all the key electrical components, circuits and even troubleshoot electrical problems using a multi meter.   The goal is to work towards self-sufficiency and to develop students' ability to find and resolve basic electrical problems.  The course runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Vancouver Maritime Museum.  For more information vaneducation@bluewatercruising.org

March 1–26Pacific Rim Whale Festival in Tofino, BC.  Celebrate the 31st annual festival! Be a part of the inspiration, education, and entertainment by celebrating the coastal traditions, unique environment, and the spring return of the grey whale.

    Again this year is the DIY Garage, PYS will be hosting a “hands on” class on marine electrical connections. Join us to learn about proper crimping techniques, heat-shrinking tips & tricks and battery connectors.  There will also be a class dedicated to solar panel installations.
