When Igor and Tanya heard Jeff Cote of PYS speak at a yacht club dinner, they realized that some of the work done by the previous owner of their MacGregor 26 - Ohana Honu was probably not up to code. In fact, they found it a bit scary to think about.

We’re looking forward to going out on our boat this season, states Tanya. PYS made it the way it should have been.
They approached Pacific Yacht Systems, who went over the boat and explained the many safety issues they were facing. As a result, they arranged for PYS to do what was required to make the boat safe, which included replacing the old flooded batteries and corroded inline fuses, and separating the battery loads to create house and engine banks. A Xantrex Linklite battery monitor and inverter were added to provide (name of boat) with the conveniences of home.

“PYS staff were courteous and their work was clean,” says Tanya. “They did what we were hoping to have done.”

Pete’s 31-foot Beneteau, Halfway Too, was built in 2008. Because some modifications had been made to its system, he felt an electrical audit was in order, and he arranged for Pacific Yacht Systems to carry this out.

PYS included Pete in the process and took the time to diagram the entire electrical system, explaining how everything worked. In doing so, they discovered that some of the electrical additions to the boat, while not particularly dangerous, were a bit “on the edge” in terms of safety. PYS prioritized their suggestions—Pete never had the feeling they were trying to make work for themselves.

PYS demystified the system for me, Pete says, and made me more aware of the electrical side of things. If I had any further work to be done, I would certainly use PYS if they were available.

Pete says PYS did the work incredibly well, without leaving any mess. Now he not only knows that his boat is safer, he has a better understanding of its system. “Anyone who has a relatively new boat would benefit from an electrical audit,” he says.

George, owner of Escape, a 50-foot Hunter, offers the following comments about his experience with Pacific Yacht Systems: “We were preparing our sailboat for extended offshore cruising in the warmer latitudes. Electronics are the heart and soul of modern boats; hence we decided on massive 1,600 AH AGM battery banks.

“We hired Pacific Yacht Systems to review and improve our electrical installation as required. They immediately took an overall systems view of our needs. They listened, analyzed, assessed, recommended and explained in layman’s terms what was needed. They took care of most aspects of our electrical power system, including AC to DC charging needs; wiring sizes; heat shrink and protective wire coverings; number, location and size of fuses; labeling; wiring diagrams; and wiring system simplification.

""We sailed from Vancouver down the west coast to Costa Rica, then turned west to the Galapagos, the Marqueses, the Tuamotu and other Polynesian islands, then to Tonga and now Fiji, soon to depart for New Zealand. We have been on the go for one year now. Although I had a number of issues with the boat normally associated with such a trip, none were related to the electrical upgrade we had done through PYS, which was one of the best investments we made in ensuring trouble-free operation on this long trip. The electronics are performing magnificently and flawlessly. It is reassuring to know that this is one area of the vessel we do not have to worry about.

By taking an integrated overall systems approach and working with specialized professionals, you can save thousands of dollars in the long run. We are now very confident that we are leaving with a well-designed and trouble-free electrical system.

Geoff knew the house batteries were going flat on his 44-foot Bavaria, Akela II. When only the fridge was running after a night at anchor, he had to start the engine to recharge the system. Obviously it was not behaving as it should.

PYS rewired part of the boat’s electrical system, including an emergency cross-over switch so that Geoff can start the engine battery from the house system, and vice versa.

I was leaving to go somewhere, states Geoff, and I had a one-day window in which the work on my boat could be done. Jeff at PYS dropped everything, came out, and did the job that same day.

Geoff describes PYS’ service and communication as excellent, and boating will now be a lot easier. “They work on the basis of what is best for your boat,” he says.

Tom describes the PYS technician’s work as meticulous and tidy. The project went very smoothly, he says, and my dealings with PYS were just fine. Navigating my boat is much easier now.

“My other autopilot was erratic,” states Tom, “and often jumped out of gear. I had to depend on a bungee cord hanging onto something solid to make it work. Now my autopilot, installed and commissioned by PYS, operates as it should.”

Keith was having charging problems with his 43-foot Jeanneau DS, Breeze. It was a new boat that didn’t have a proper charging system, and the house power would run down after just one night at anchor. So he went online to find a service provider and was impressed with Pacific Yacht Systems’ website; his first impression was confirmed when he saw their professionalism in conducting business.

Having a new charging system has made a lot of difference in the way I use my boat, says Keith. Now I don’t have to go to a dock every time a need power—I can get it off my engine, which means I can stay at anchor as long as I want.

PYS installed a new battery system, along with a Balmar smart regulator, resulting in faster recharging when the boat’s engine system is running. They also installed a Xantrex Linklite battery monitor so that Keith knows exactly what the house batteries are doing. This allows him to anchor out for as long as he wants, instead of having to moor the boat every time the power was low.

When the work was completed, PYS went over the system with Keith from start to finish. He has recommended PYS to other boaters because “they run a good company.”

When Rob purchased Prairie Rose it was thirty years old, with its original wiring. Over the next five years, Rob did a fair bit of work on his boat, but he knew that electrical design would be out of his league, so he contacted Pacific Yacht Systems. After an initial consultation, when Rob learned what was possible, he decided to have the boat’s entire electrical system revamped.

“I worked side by side with PYS nearly every step of the way,” states Rob. “Jeff eagerly explained what he was doing and why, in a way I could understand.” Rob was particularly impressed at the way all of the boat’s electronics, of different brands and compatibility, were networked into a seamless package.

Rob recently sailed to Alaska on the Prairie Rose and greatly enjoyed having sufficient power to run everything—navigation system, fridge, even his breadmaker—without any problems. Knowing he won’t have to stop and work on the boat means he has more time to enjoy being on the water.

Deborah and Jerry had owned Vita Brevis a 34-foot Catalina, for three years and in that time had not had a single successful boating season. Every year they encountered another problem and found they were hoping for the best whenever they left the dock. On more occasions than they care to remember, problems with the boat’s electrical system caused them grief. For example, on one occasion the windlass didn’t work, while another time the engine would not start after a night at anchor.

Instead of installing $10,000 worth of ‘toys,’ says Jerry,  PYS emphasized the importance of first laying out a simple and reliable electrical system. And that was absolutely the right thing to do. PYS did a fantastic job of designing and installing our DC electrical system.

When Jerry first approached Pacific Yacht Systems, he had already spent a lot of time planning how to make the boat’s electrical and navigation systems more consistent and reliable. PYS understood where he wanted to go, but suggested first laying a strong foundation, rather than just adding bells and whistles to the existing system.

Now, with new wiring, navigation and communications systems,  Deborah and Jerry’s boating experience has changed completely. Their confidence level has “increased by 100 percent,” Vita Brevis works flawlessly, and they can actually get a good night’s sleep on the boat.

PYS overhauled the entire power system, resulting in reduced battery-charging time and the convenience of being able to run appliances while out on the water—all of which made for a better cruising experience.

Even after the job is done and paid for, says Bob,  I can phone PYS with my questions; they always get back to me the same day.

Bob especially appreciates the personal service he received from PYS. His new system was so different from the original, he says that Jeff Cote essentially gave him a course in how to operate it. Bob is now very happy to be on his boat: “It works like a damn.”

Laurie knew that the electronics on his sailboat, Salish Moon, weren’t up to snuff; the electronics and radar were so old, they didn’t communicate with each other. So when he learned that Jeff Cote had installed some navigation equipment on his own boat, Laurie wanted to check it out. He was so impressed with what he saw, he contracted with Jeff to install a similar system on Salish Moon. The two worked on it together, and in the process, Laurie learned about the intricacies of his vessel.

When Jeff inspected Salish Moon’s batteries, he discovered that the boat’s electrical system wasn’t up to code—the cables weren’t fused, and that was a potential fire hazard. Laurie instructed Jeff to treat the problem as if it was on his own boat, and now everything is up to code.

Jeff is a stand-up guy, says Laurie.  He goes above and beyond, and he’s not trying to manufacture work for himself.

Laurie reports that his boating experience has improved by 100%. With a Raymarine C120 chartplotter, X-5 Sport Pilot autopilot, DSM 30 Digital Sounder and radar that communicate with each other, it’s like having an extra crew member on board. His navigation system is reliable now, and he has peace of mind when visibility is poor or when he’s sailing on his own. “The increase in the safety factor is incredible,” he says.

Two years later, Lyall decided to sell his boat. A potential buyer hired a surveyor to inspect it; on the strength of the surveyor’s report, which confirmed the excellent quality of the PYS workmanship and materials that had gone into the boat’s DC system, that individual bought Ocean Grace.

A year and a half ago, Grant bought a 45-foot sailboat. From the get go, the radar never worked. Several people were sent to work on it; they would tinker, say everything looked fine, and leave. Some said it was a manufacturing defect; others said it hadn't been installed properly. Both gave up.

Meanwhile, Grant cancelled some trips and wasted days at anchor in deep fog.  His favourite cruising grounds are the north end of Vancouver Island  ""There's a reason why they call it the month of Fogust up there—it's not somewhere you want to be without radar"".

The warranty expired, and still, the radar had never worked.

There's nothing Jeff can't do - he's unique in this business,   says Grant.  When he calls manufacturers, he can talk engineer to engineer, but when he talks to me it's boater to boater.

That's when Grant was referred to Pacific Yacht Systems. ""Right away I saw a different approach—Jeff worked his way through the whole system until, through a process of elimination, he found the problem."" The renegade radar? A network interface problem compounded by improper cable installation.

With working radar for the first time, Grant was a happy man.

But there was more. Jeff crimped the network cables properly and rewired the battery connection to improve efficiency.  Grant hadn't been using the anchor light because it was burning through 20 amp hours a night; with a new battery and LED light, it used less than one amp hour. There was also something odd about the autopilot and the chartplotter—they'd never been networked. Now Grant can use autopilot without having to set each new course manually. And for somebody who sails on his own quite a bit, the Raymarine wireless controller networked to his navigation system has made a big difference. ""I just enjoy getting out on the boat a lot more now.""

But for somebody who spent a fruitless year working with no results, what Grant appreciates most is Pacific Yacht Systems' customer service and follow-up ""Jeff never gives up—once everything was fixed, he still checked in to make sure everything was working smoothly.""

While crossing Georgia Strait Mark got caught in a fog bank—he didn't know if a freighter was coming down on him.  He knew it was time to install radar on his 36' Catalina Adagio.

When designing the layout for the radar Pacific Yacht Systems' Jeff Cote noticed that the cabling to the Adagio navigation system was sub-par. The system wasn't able to carry enough power for radar, instruments, and the chartplotter. Since reliability was top priority Mark decided to improve the electrical system.

Mark appreciates that PYS takes the time to look at the big picture—asking lots of questions and figuring out areas to improve systems.

Jeff is as much a teacher as an installer - he helps people learn about their boat, says Mark. Everything we did, I knew exactly why we were doing it and how it fit in to the big picture. Now I want a larger battery bank so I can enjoy more comforts onboard Adagio.

On Adagio the house batteries and starter batteries were connected. Jeff separated them, which protects the starter battery for engine starting. Mark was tired of continuously running the engine to recharge the batteries. Jeff installed a new alternator and regulator to efficiently charge the batteries.

The PYS improvements weren't all about safety, the inverter gave the crew some creature comforts. They now can run the TV and coffee pot even when they're not connected to shore power.

Mark also likes the great follow up—""I inadvertently set a wrong switch for the battery and thought it was a flat, PYS came down and got it sorted out free of charge. They really care that everything is working well.""

Although the new electrical system hasn't made a difference to sailing or performance, it's given Mark a lot more confidence in his boat. He and Nancy are planning longer trips, maybe up to Desolation Sound. His ultimate goal is to circumnavigate Vancouver Island—and now his boat isn't holding him back.

David arranged for PYS to conduct an electrical audit on Club Paradise, his 2008 Hunter 45 CC, after hearing great things about PYS through the sailing community. The audit revealed a number of areas needing attention, including the complete replacement of the main battery bank due to a previous technician not installing the correct battery temperature sensor, which led to misinformation being delivered from the batteries to the charger, resulting in two years of undercharging and destruction of the life and capacity of the battery bank. In addition, the audit revealed that some things had been done incorrectly and were dangerous as a result; some things had been done poorly; and some things could have been improved upon. As David is preparing to sail to and through the Panama Canal, then over the Mediterranean, he needs everything to be working perfectly. ""I need to know I've done everything I can to make it as safe and as comfortable as possible,"" he says. So he entrusted his boat to PYS.

PYS has provided exactly what I was looking for: a full audit and review of what I wanted to accomplish, all areas and systems impacted by the work required, and what had to be done so that everything gelled, says David. This included the people of PYS challenging and educating one large company that provided less than acceptable operating parameters on their equipment; only after extensive work by PYS did this company agree. This has given me exactly what I requested and paid for, rather than accepting a compromised solution.

David appreciates that PYS is a full-solution provider. He says, from his personal experience, that many people in the marine service industry are only too willing to do a quick partial job, just the minimum to get by, rather than taking the time to look at the entire picture and do the right job, providing a full solution after considering all aspects and areas impacted, not just the specific job at hand. PYS was very clear and did advise him at the beginning of their relationship that their service would involve more time, resulting in higher costs, but the work would be done completely and correctly.

At a presentation by PYS at the False Creek Yacht Club, he sensed that they were knowledgeable and their opinions could be trusted, so he arranged for them to carry out an electrical audit of his boat. In doing so, they discovered that some of the electrical additions to the boat, while not particularly dangerous, were a bit “on the edge” in terms of safety. PYS included Pete in the process and took the time to diagram the entire electrical system, explaining how everything worked. ""PYS demystified the system for me,"" Pete says, ""and made me more aware of the electrical side of things.""

The service provided by PYS was absolutely excellent, states Pete. They are first-rate, honest, straightforward, and very good professionals.

PYS prioritized their suggestions—Pete never had the feeling they were trying to make work for themselves—and rewired the circuits to make sure the system was running safely and efficiently. Pete says PYS did the work incredibly well, and he was pleased that the boat was left in immaculate condition. More recently, PYS helped Pete deal with a spill of battery fluid, which probably occurred during a routine service undertaken by someone else. ""I feel more confident that my boat's electrical system is working well,"" he says.

After one season of boating on Alegria, a Beneteau 331, David found that its batteries weren't powerful enough to maintain a charge for much more than one night. He added two additional batteries himself, but they still weren't strong enough for his kind of sailing, as he likes to spend several days at anchor out on the water. So after meeting with PYS at a boat show, David arranged for an electrical audit; he liked the way PYS looked at the boat's entire system, and arranged for them to not only upgrade the batteries but to install a high-output alternator, an external regulator, and a battery monitor.

Now, with our new electrical system, we can anchor out for one or two nights without plugging in, says David. It keeps our beer and wine cold!

While out sailing with the new system, one of the house batteries failed. David immediately got in touch with PYS, who gave him some advice over the phone. As soon as he returned, PYS was there to replace the battery and recheck the boat's system. Then PYS went to battle with the battery supplier on David's behalf and obtained a credit for another pair of batteries. The following season, a battery failed again. ""That's almost unheard of,"" David says. ""That's not supposed to happen."" Again, PYS were quickly on the job with another install. David is very pleased with that kind of service.

Arnie took a boat maintenance course where PYS made a presentation. ""Everyone in the class was impressed with their knowledge,"" he says. When he learned that PYS would conduct an audit on a boat's electrical system, and for a reasonable cost, he decided that would be useful to have for his 30-foot Catalina, Fantasea II.

PYS presented Arnie with a prioritized list of issues to be dealt with, starting with safety (a big concern for Arnie, as he takes his grandchildren boating). And safety, on PYS' terms, meant not just making sure the wiring was done properly, but also knowing that things would work the way they should when Arnie needed them to work. PYS installed a SMART plug and 3 phase battery charger system and redid the engine wiring. ""It was a mess,"" says Arnie. They also installed new batteries, rewiring them with proper fusing.

PYS really know their way around the electrical part of the boat, states Arnie.

Arnie no longer has any concerns about an electrical fire on his boat, and he's confident that he can start the engine at any time, even when he's at a dock with no power.

Des asked other boating friends to recommend someone to work on his 36-foot Catalina, Wainui. He phoned a short list of companies; PYS returned his call. From the prioritized list prepared by PYS, Des chose to complete the first stage of bringing his boat's electrical system up to speed by having the battery and charging system upgraded; he's arranged to have the next stage completed this year.

PYS completed their work within the time frame and budget that we discussed, says Des. My business is construction management, so I understand how important this is.

Des no longer worries about having sufficient battery power when out on the water, and states that he would highly recommend PYS to any other boater.

The chartplotter on Kalerin, Doug's Hunter, was no longer working effectively, so he contacted PYS after seeing their ad in Pacific Yachting Magazine. He says that although he had some initial ideas about what brand to choose, PYS were helpful in laying out other available options. The installation proved not to be straightforward. PYS kept Doug actively involved in the decision-making throughout, then followed up in the next day or two to make sure everything was working as it should.

PYS did what they said they would do, in the time frame they gave me, states Doug. There were no surprises, which isn't always the case when someone works on your boat.

Doug describes PYS' work as ""terrific . . . very professional."" Now he finds that his pleasure at being on the water is greatly enhanced by the up-to-date electronics on his boat.
