Using One Charger For Two Different Battery Types, on Jul 05, 2018 asked:

I hate asking you questions as I'm not even a customer, but if you move to Monterey CA I promise to give you business. That said, I watched all of your basic electrical videos and spent at least an hour researching this before I wrote this email. I'm going to get 2 Firefly Oasis AGMs for my house bank and use my current AGM for a starter battery. If I get a solenoid switch to charge the batteries from the alternator, I won't sleep at night knowing that the starter battery isn't getting the correct 3 stage charge (assuming a 3 stage regulator is installed) as I will set the voltage sensing wire to house bank. Maybe I misunderstood Nigel Calder, but I think that's what he recommends. Now, he talks about the Stirling Power Alternator to the battery charger and I'm leaning in this direction. My question, is this just over the top? Will the starter battery not be significantly harmed by bulk charging if it's in parallel to the house bank by solenoid? Is there another Blueseas product I am overlooking? This seems like such a common configuration, I can't imagine I'm the only one struggling with this. Another solution I came up with, I'm not sure is safe or effective, can I run the alternator to a distribution block, then to two independent 3 stage regulators for each bank? -Steve

Should My Battery Monitor Be Set For 12V or 24V?, on May 08, 2018 asked:

Changes to the electrical on the boat look great but I have a couple of questions. Is the battery monitor, monitoring the house batteries only? Should the battery monitor be set for 12v or 24v? Looking forward to getting out on the boat and testing everything out! - Dave

How Many Battery Connections are Acceptable?, on Mar 29, 2018 asked:

I’ve recently watched some of your You Tube electrical videos and realize I have some no-no’s at my battery terminals. Is it acceptable to have more than one cable ‘stacked’ on each other at the terminal? For example, a starter cable, bus cable and battery charger cable? If not, what is the proper protocol? How do you determine the size of the cable going from a terminal to a bus (add up all the amperage of the devices being serviced)? Is there a schematic somewhere illustrating a typical marine battery hookup? I realize there is probably no typical hookup, but something that could be used as a guideline. - Brent

Do You Recommend The Victron 700 or Victron 702 Battery Monitor?, on Dec 04, 2017 asked:

Thank you for all of the electrical wiring videos on your website, they are a great help. I have a 1988 Catalina 30 with outdated and questionable wiring from the previous owner, so I'm upgrading. I have a two battery bank system (house and start). Do you recommend the Victron 700 (monitoring house only) or 702 (monitoring house and start batteries)? Thanks for all of your help. - Bruce

My 900W Coffee Maker is Triggering the Low Voltage Alarm, on Sep 05, 2017 asked:

My commercial salmon troller has a 1600W inverter drawing from a single 8D lead-acid battery which is isolated from the two other 8Ds at night when on anchor and the engine is off. The engine has an 80A alternator and is usually running 16-18 hours per day. The biggest load we put on the inverter is a 900W standard coffee maker, which we only use while the engine is running. While brewing coffee the voltage reading on the inverter display is usually in the mid 11s and the low voltage alarm occasionally starts going off. The voltage goes right back up when the coffee is done brewing. Is this type of use bad for the battery or hard on the inverter? I have size 4 cables going to the inverter, which is what the installation manual called for, and the run is only about 3 feet. - David

Inconsistent Alternator Charging, on May 02, 2017 asked:

We are very pleased with the Firefly Oasis AGM battery you installed for us. We can actually relax about our power consumption now. We should have made the changes much sooner! Regarding charging the AGM battery, is it harmful for the battery to be charged to inconsistent levels by the alternator? When on the boat for several days, the battery does not always get fully recharged each day. Is it better, when possible, to minimize alternator charging and maximize charging with the smart charger when connected to shore power? - Sean

Switching to AGM Batteries, on Apr 04, 2017 asked:

My boat came with two starting batteries and I want to switch to AGM, what should I look out for? I have two 24M-800(CCA) 1000 CA starting batteries that came with the boat when I purchased it new. I don't leave them in the boat over winter from early November to early March. They are stored on my work shop wood bench in a heated garage over winter and are charged approximately every six weeks. They will not hold a charge for any period of time. I am thinking of changing them out with AGM batteries. A #27 series and a #31 series batteries. Can AGM batteries be used for both starting and house applications? All the research I have done on AGM's state they are good for both applications. Also , why would ether the manufacturer or the dealer put two starting batteries in the boat? Thanks in advance I look forward to your reply. - Lyn

Replacing My Old Batteries, on Jan 31, 2017 asked:

My house batteries on my 42 foot Nordic Tug are in need of replacement. I have 6 golf cart interstate batteries with 600 amp hours. I believe I have 3 choices: 1. Replace with the same flooded, lead acid batteries – around $1000 or less – least expensive but require maintenance and last up to 5 years 2. Replace with AGM 3. Replace with Firefly Carbon Foam Can you review what I have and how they are currently connected and then recommend my options with cabling for the new style AGM or Firefly. Can you provide Canadian pricing for the options? - Bert
