Does PYS Offer Consulting Services?, on Aug 16, 2016 asked:

I have seen your YouTube videos of the boat show classes. Nice work! You are knowledgeable. Since I am in San Diego, I cannot come in and see you, but am wondering if you are available for hire as a consultant? My wife and I are having a 53 foot offshore sailing catamaran built that we plan to circumnavigate. I specified B&G over Raymarine, since I have heard from multiple sources that Raymarine’s quality was low over the past few years, but is now improving under FLIR. However, I hear B&G is still good quality, fewer repairs. In addition, B&G has a plant in Ensenada, Mexico which is 70 miles away. I am not an engineer, therefore my trade-off is to have less bells and whistles and/or “technical” systems in exchange for fewer repairs and quality construction since we are going to be in remote places and I don’t want to deal with repairs in or out of civilization. The builder will install the chosen system and space is available for any size. Can I hire you for your advice? -Bryan

What Devices Are Compatible with Raymarine A Series MFDs? – Tony, on Apr 22, 2015 asked:

Is the Raymarine RD218 Radome Scanner compatible with the Raymarine a65 MFD or a78 MFD? If so, what cables, connectors or other equipment do I need?

Derick – Raymarine Scanner Not Responding, on Dec 07, 2014 asked:

We have an issue with the radar. Upon turning it on we are receiving a message “scanner not responding”. A web search indicates that this message indicates a communication error between display and scanner. It is an older, standalone Raymarine RL70C display for the radar only and not connected to the MFD. We powered off the breakers we were working with and the large cable for the unit was moved around a lot in the process. However, we tried replacing the connections on that wire with no change in the error message. I have 12V power to the terminal block at the mast but no communication to/from the scanner. We disconnected and left disconnected a Raymarine junction block that we believe is an unused GPS antenna. There was an old NMEA plug connected to the back of the display that was not connected to anything and the end was loose in the electrical cabinet. We removed it entirely. There is also a SeaTalk plug in the back of the radar display that I do not believe is connected to anything. Would that have anything to do with it? Does the radar need a GPS reference? Additionally, there is a large black wire with power, ground and two small gauge wires off of it.

Patrick – Laptop with Navigation vs. Chartplotter, on Nov 16, 2014 asked:

I have an older 26 ft. Campion Sport Cruiser and I am researching which chartplotter gives me the best bang for my money. I keep coming back to a hand held GPS (or mounted antenna) in combination with a cheap laptop with navigation software installed. For the cost of one of the new chartplotters I can get a much bigger screen, better resolution, more computing power, a multi-functioning machine that I can replace four or five times before I come close to matching the price of one of the new HD chartplotter/fishfinders that are mentioned in the latest Pacific Yachting issue. Why wouldn't I do this and spend the money saved on a new fishing rod and an electric downrigger?

David – Transducer Mount, Best Practice, on Oct 13, 2014 asked:

My in hull mount transducer from my Cutwater 28 became loose and broke off due to the epoxy glue cracking. When I pressed transducer tight to the hull surface it gives no reading. Can you help? Thanks!

John – Chartplotter and Transducer, on Mar 09, 2014 asked:

What makes the Furuno 1870 a good choice for a chartplotter/sounder? Also, what would you recommend for a new in-hull transducer? I understand a through-hull will work better, but my main concern is to see bottom structure at anchoring depths of less than 60 feet.

Jim, on Mar 04, 2013 asked:

I live in Port Moody and the boat is in the front of my house, could PYS come to this location? The previous owner had installed a Raymarine c127 12" screen. GPS and fish finder/sounder work but radar shows no data available and doesn't work.
