Upgrading from Flooded to AGM Batteries – What Setting Do I Change Including My Solar Controller?, on Jul 04, 2017 asked:

Last year I installed a Gioco 130W solar panel with a Genasun GV-10 Pb controller to charge my older flooded lead acid batteries along with a Victron BMV-700 Series battery monitor. I have just purchased brand new AGM batteries and I am wondering what steps I have to take before replacing the old batteries? - Heidi

Inconsistent Alternator Charging, on May 02, 2017 asked:

We are very pleased with the Firefly Oasis AGM battery you installed for us. We can actually relax about our power consumption now. We should have made the changes much sooner! Regarding charging the AGM battery, is it harmful for the battery to be charged to inconsistent levels by the alternator? When on the boat for several days, the battery does not always get fully recharged each day. Is it better, when possible, to minimize alternator charging and maximize charging with the smart charger when connected to shore power? - Sean

What Are Examples of a Good High Ouput Alternator?, on Jul 05, 2016 asked:

I read your Tech Talk article "Small Boat Electrical” and see in the costs chart you have $300.00 for a high output alternator. Could you give some examples of these types/brands/output and would they include a smart charger built in? Thanks for the great informative article. –Terry

Does My Inverter Draw More Than What My Alternator Creates? - Doug, on Oct 16, 2015 asked:

My SOC was 51% and my meter said inverting -7 amps. I started the engine at 1200 rpm and my meter says inverting 66 amps. Am I correct in assuming that I am putting 60 amps per hour into my batteries? So after a couple of hours I will have another 120 amps in the batteries and should be good for the night?

Bypassing an Alternator’s Internal Regulator – Erick, on Oct 01, 2015 asked:

I had a Delco Remy alternator in the boat when purchased it. It was hooked-up to a Balmar 612 external regulator. When it quit, I replaced it with same model Delco Remy and fried it in no time. I have been told by Balmar the problem is that the new Delco Remy had its own interior regulator and will not work with the existing set up. I have disconnected the Balmar 612 from the system and replaced it with the same Delco Remy. My question is it worked before (for several years) so how do you bypass the interior regulator?

ProIsoCharge Voltage Sense Wire Install – David, on Jan 15, 2015 asked:

I have a technical question regarding the interface between my ProIsoCharge unit and my Xantrex digital alternator regulator. The ProIsoCharge documentation and hook up is straight forward. Where I have a question is the connection of the Xantrex. Based on what I read in the ProIsoCharge documentation the ProIsoCharge will switch back and forth between my house battery and my starting battery based on what battery needs to be charged. If I hook the red wire to my house bank side of the ProIsoCharge then the start battery will not get charged properly. I am not sure where the red wire is connected currently with the old isolator I have currently have installed.

Battery Charging Sweet Spot and Maximum Depth of Discharge– David, on Dec 21, 2014 asked:

Working through the booklet that came with the battery monitor, how low as a % should I or can I go before needing to charge up the house; starter batteries? We left H Bay at approximately 85% and it climbed up to 93% during our crossing. Obviously the alternator is doing its work nicely. Then the monitor went to 100% after we were connected to shore power. What % would you think I should use as my low point? Before I worry about needing a charge (go for a cruise or plug in to shore or use the genset).

High Output Alternator Recommendation – Jean, on Nov 30, 2014 asked:

Can you recommend an alternator manufacturer? I would like to install a 150A unit. Do I have to change my wiring between this new alternator and my house bank? I imagine I will have to change the fuse also.

Don – Overcharging the Start Battery, on Sep 28, 2014 asked:

On a sail boat with both a start battery and house battery that is charged by the engine alternator, why do you not overcharge the start battery if the house battery is discharged and the alternator is putting out high charging due to the low house battery?
