Ask PYS: Power

A couple of years ago I bought a Par Jabsco variable speed pump. This year, when filling water tanks and switching the pump on, I found that the pump would not stop pumping. This pressurized my water system to extreme levels. I took it in for repairs and was told that 9 out of 10 of this type of pump fail. Are there any good ones out there?

Hi Lorne,

That's an interesting one. I personally have had two variable speed pumps and they work fine. Not sure what is more dependable out there. On my own boat we always carry a spare and I change the pump ever 5 years or so.

Have you ever considered the possibility of low voltage at the pump? Through experience I've found many pumps with undersized, corroded, or too many connections (back to back butt connectors) on the wiring.
