Waterproofing your iPad: a boater's guide

To accompany our previous post on boat appropriate iPad mounts, we also researched numerous waterproof case options for the iPad. The options for waterproof cases range from giant Ziploc bags to super deluxe reinforced cases. Here are a few:

DryCASE Waterproof iPad Case $60 It is a flexible crystal clear waterproof case that allows complete use of your iPad while keeping it dry and clean. It also includes a watertight connection for your earphones and a built-in hand pump to remove the excess air and secure your device.

Case Logic IPADW-101 Water Resistant iPad Case

OverBoard Waterproof iPad Case

All are ~$20
All designed specifically for the iPad to protect against water, dust, dirt and sand. Most models come with an adjustable shoulder strap.

Otterbox iPad Defender Series $90 Has a high-quality polycarbonate shell and a durable silicone skin while still allowing full functionality. It is not quite waterproof but does allow the iPad to endure some extremely rugged conditions and could fit into a waterproof case.

Finally, there is this high quality German made waterproof and impact proof case that really caught our eye. It fits the iPad and the iPad2 (with some slight modifications) and the iPad is completely functional while inside the case. As an added bonus, it can be used with the RAM 202 Mount Unit. It would be seriously tempting to take this out on the dinghy but the $400 price tag is a bit rich.

Hopefully this entry has provided you with some helpful tips. One last shopping thought, why not add a wireless waterproof keyboard? They usually retail at around $40. Have you found an alternative method to protect your iPad from the elements? Let us know!
