User Generated Content and the Boating World

"Friend me"? Not quite, but the social media ideas made popular by sites like Facebook have gained a foothold in the boating world. Industry leaders in navigational charts, Navionics, are utilizing peer-to peer concepts with their UGC (User Generated Content) that focus on personalized chart modifications and changes that can be shared between boaters. In addition to UGC, Navionics offers a wide range of affordable applications for use with iPhone, iPad, and Android and Nokia smartphones.

With the ease of touch-screen technology, the Navionics app is a simple chartplotter that that will work outside of the cellular coverage area with your iPhone or iPad's 3GS enabled built-in GPS receiver. Within its menus you can add and delete waypoints, plan routes, track your progress with speed over ground, and course over ground, or access currents and tide tables. And all of this can be done anytime, anywhere! When closer to home, share your tracks, routes, geo-tagged pictures, and waypoints on Facebook and Twitter, or email your adventure log to a friend to be viewed on Google Earth. Read more here.
